Antique Red Oak Dining Table Restoration

Max & Louise’s well-travelled early 1900s red oak dining table and matching chairs recently came into our workshop for a much-needed restoration. This timeless set, cherished by the same family for more than a century, was carefully rejuvenated to preserve its heritage, strengthen its structure, and renew its everyday comfort.

We began with the essential work: repairing loose joints to restore stability and longevity to the original craftsmanship. Then, to bring the chairs back to life without compromising the character of the set, we reupholstered the seating by replacing the traditional spring seats with high-density foam for improved support and a more durable, comfortable sit. We finished the transformation with brand-new, carefully selected fabric so the chairs look refreshed while still feeling authentic to the period style.

Our approach balances preservation with practicality. The goal wasn’t to replace what made the set special, but to enhance it for the next chapter. By upgrading the interior comfort using high density foam, the chairs are now more comfortable for daily use—while the exterior remains true to the timeless look that has made this set a family favourite for generations.

Red oak is a uniquely beautiful timber, known for its distinctive grain and warm, classic tone. It’s also a material that’s surprisingly uncommon in woodwork today, especially in Hong Kong, making this restoration even more meaningful. The grain, proportions, and craftsmanship of red oak can hold a lot of visual “personality,” so we treated the set with care to ensure we didn’t strip away its character.

Restoring heritage furniture requires skill, patience, and restraint. We focused on renewing the existing beauty rather than overhauling it—so the natural identity of the wood, the period feel, and the charm of the original design remain intact.

We’re deeply grateful that Max & Louise trusted us with their family heirloom. Seeing a more than 100-year-old dining set returned to its best form is always rewarding, but knowing it will continue to be enjoyed for many generations to come makes the process truly special.
